Who wore a fruit hat? Carmen Miranda, GCIH, OMC was a Portuguese-born Brazilian samba singer, dancer, Broadway actress and film star who was active from the 1930s onwards. Nicknamed “The Brazilian Bombshell”, Miranda is known for her signature fruit hat outfit that she wore in her American films.
Why do people wear fruit hats? Carmen’s iconic “fruit hats” helped propel the performer to fame. They were inspired by the Afro-Brazilian fruit vendors, known as baianas, who sold produce in Rio de Janeiro where she grew up. Before becoming an international star, Carmen also worked in a hat shop, and was inspired by the city’s samba music.
